Banished and unnecessary

Suppose we happen to have at our disposal a time travel machine and rewind a few years back in time. It is 2018, a rally is held in the center of Yerevan, at which newly minted “prime minister” Pashinyan, who has just completed his first 100 days in office, accounts for his performance to the crowd.

If one is to believe Pashinyan from six years ago, they ought to feel dizzy with successes all around. In just a few months, he has allegedly eradicated corruption among high-ranking officials, established a free and impartial justice system, eliminated monopolies, and nearly brought the economy to the top. Well, the first “job totals” are impressive indeed. The first pledges of the new administration are not any less impressive. In particular, Pashinyan vows not to “surrender lands” to Azerbaijan and not to sign any document on the settlement of the Artsakh crisis unbeknownst to the Armenian people. And the cherry on the top of the cake is the prime minister’s guarantee that with such a leader of the country every Armenian can confidently look to the future, feel safe in their homeland, raise children and realise their potential. Point taken. Then a flash, and we are back to 2024.

These days. The promise not to cede land is “fulfilled” so well that it is only a matter of time before Armenia formalises its political surrender. Artsakh is handed over to the enemy, more than 120 thousand people were expelled from their homes, they have nowhere to return to. In the list of “achievements” of recent years, there is red dot on 26,571 – the number of people from Artsakh who left Armenia irrevocably for the period 2020-2024. That is, about 18% of the inhabitants of Artsakh left to seek a better life who where: to Russia, Georgia, Iran, UAE, etc. And those are only official figures, after all. The real numbers could be much bigger.

In any case, this is just the first wave of emigration. People leave because they do not see any prospects for their future in Armenia. They can be understood. Apparently, their plans do not include the transformation into Turks. Otherwise, they would have quietly remained in Artsakh handed over to Azerbaijan. Pashinyan and the current government do not need them, just as the master of the current “prime minister” Levon Ter-Petrosyan did not find any use for the Armenians from Baku, Sumgait, and Kirovabad (Gandzak) in the 90s. You can judge of a man by his teachers, and as we all know, a wild goose never laid a tame egg.
